The Ultimate Survival Guide + Travel Checklist

How to Travel Comfortably During Your Period

Having your period when traveling ranks up there on the annoying scale with doing your taxes and handling boob sweat (aka, things you don’t want to think about but have to). Even if you’re headed to a remote tropical island where the only obligation is to read a menu, weathering the emotional and physical toll of traveling in the 21st century takes practice and patience.

But rest easy, traveling frand, because we’re here with a full-coverage survival guide that’ll make bleeding while you bounce around the globe all the better. You can get a travel checklist here.

Pack the Period Essentials

If you’ve ever had your period before (most likely every one of you!), we assume you know the drill about what to pack that’ll bring you comfort. Just in case, here’s what we suggest:

  • A period product that offers longer (safer) wear.
  • Panty liners in case you forget to change your period product and end up leaking.
  • A reusable water bottle that you can fill at a water station once you get through airport security.
  • Calming teas that can help deal with travel anxieties- If you’re flying, keep it in your carry-on and ask a flight attendant for some hot water.
  • A travel pill case pre-filled with your preferred over-the-counter painkillers & supplements - If you’re flying internationally, it may be hard to find your favorite products overseas!
  • Baby wipes to clean your hands before you change your period products
  • Pro-tip: Pack hand warmers to tuck into the band of your underwear if cramps are especially bad to act as a discreet, makeshift hot pad.

Pack the Fun Stuff

These are the items that don’t often make the cut but will provide a little extra TLC when traveling to your destination while you bleed.

  • An essential PMS oil, like Blume, which soothes headaches and mood swings.
  • A mini-vibrator because orgasms relieve cramps!
  • Hydrating face & lip masks to avoid those dry air crusties - especially after a long plane ride.
  • Cozy socks for some ASMR.
  • CBD gummies for relaxation (if you’re not driving).
  • Snacks that SPARK JOY + are travel friendly (Pro tip: Nut butters are considered a liquid so make sure it’s under 3.4 oz

Be A Prepper

Before you jet off, have a plan in place so you know what you’re doing and when.

  • Pre-schedule a ride service like Uber or Lyft or reserve a spot at an airport parking lot 2-4 weeks before you travel to get the best rate.
  • Set your coffee machine the night before to make you a fresh pot before you head off or fill your reusable bottle with cold brew and drink it on your way to the airport. It will be ready to go through security by the time you arrive and you can re-fill with another liquid of your choice.
  • If you’re driving long distances, pre-plan a destination(s) along your route to change your period product.

Entertain Yourself

  • Download your favorite shows or movies before you leave so you can stream without WIFI (and in case your flight doesn’t have entertainment!)
  • Save your favorite podcasts/ tunes to your phone so you can access them without cell service of WIFI. Some ear candy playlists for you below.

Move Your Bod

Staying stagnant makes you feel tired. Find small ways to get moving and welcome endorphins while on the road.

  • If you’re on a plane and feeling uncomfy, chances are you can do a few in-seat stretches that will help. Twist, touch your toes, give yourself a hug, etc.
  • If you’re in the car: neck rolls, arm stretches at stop lights, and gas station breaks, help aid in getting loose.
  • Dance in your seat to an epic playlist from above. Who cares if your seatmate is weirded out? You’ll probably never see them again. Or you might make a new friend!

Invest in Yourself

Set yourself up for success pre-travel and during by doing a few things that re-center you.

  • Dress cozy. You will still look cute in leggings and a comfy sweater, we promise. Don’t wear restrictive clothing that will make it feel hard to be comfortable – especially when you’re on your period.
  • Meditate. The Internet is a wonderful place and there are apps a-plenty that can help you feel centered and Zen – even if the baby next to you is screaming bloody murder. Try Enso, Calm and 10% Happier.
  • If not driving, bring a journal. Write down thoughts, feelings, your life story, or that letter you’ve been meaning to write- for a while now. If you don’t like to journal, try a crossword or sudoku.

Let It Go

Your period is a part of your life, but it doesn’t have to get in the way. Remember to be present and enjoy the ride!

Happy, safe travels, wherever you’re headed.
